Trim
A diver's orientation in the water, ideally flat and horizontal, so propulsion drives you forward, not up or down, with fins clear of the bottom.
Trim is your body's orientation in the water, and good trim in most diving means horizontal: a flat platform from head to fins, face down, knees bent, and fin tips up. It matters because your fins push opposite to where they point. A diver swimming feet-down ploughs upward with every kick and must stay negatively buoyant to compensate, wasting energy and gas. A diver in flat trim slides forward through the water with minimal drag, disturbs nothing below, and keeps propulsion cleanly separated from buoyancy.
Trim is set by the distribution of weight and buoyancy along your body, not by effort. Tank position, where your weights sit, wing or jacket shape, and even fin buoyancy all shift the balance point. If your feet sink, move weight toward the shoulders or the tank higher; floaty feet call for the opposite, or heavier fins. Once statically balanced, you hold trim with a slight back arch and bent knees, the classic skydiver posture. Backplate and wing setups are popular partly because they make horizontal trim easy.
The payoff compounds: flat trim protects reef and visibility by keeping fin wash off the silt, improves your SAC rate, makes the frog kick and back kick work properly, and simply looks like competence underwater. Photos and video from a dive are a brutally honest trim audit, and small gear experiments, a trim weight moved to a cam band or a change of fins, often fix in five minutes what months of finning technique cannot.
