The core scuba skill of managing your position in the water column using breath, BCD, and weighting so you neither sink nor float unintentionally.

Buoyancy control is the skill of deciding where you sit in the water column and staying there on purpose. A diver's buoyancy is a balance between weight pulling down and displacement pushing up, per Archimedes' principle, and it changes constantly through a dive: your wetsuit compresses with depth, your tank gets lighter as you breathe gas from it, and every breath swells or shrinks your lungs. Controlling all of that with small BCD adjustments and, above all, with breathing, is what separates a diver who glides from one who yo-yos.

Good buoyancy control is a safety skill first. It prevents uncontrolled ascents and their decompression risk, keeps you off fragile coral and out of silt, holds a steady safety stop at 5 m, and dramatically lowers air consumption because you stop finning to compensate. The technique is proactive: start correctly weighted via a proper weight check, add small puffs of air to the BCD as you descend, vent as you rise, and fine-tune moment to moment with lung volume. Anticipate changes rather than chasing them.

It is a skill that never stops improving. New divers ride the inflator button, experienced divers barely touch it. Peak performance buoyancy specialties, proper trim, and simply logging your weighting per suit and tank configuration in your dive log all shorten the road to effortless, hands-off control. The fastest feedback loop is watching your gauge and your buddy: fewer corrections, a flatter profile, and a lower SAC rate all confirm the skill is settling in.
