Backplate and Wing

A modular BCD system built from a metal plate, one-piece harness, and back-mounted air cell, favored for trim, simplicity, and scalability.

A backplate and wing is a BCD stripped to first principles: a stainless steel or aluminum plate against your back, a continuous webbing harness, and a donut or horseshoe shaped air cell, the wing, sandwiched between plate and tank. All lift sits behind you, which pushes divers naturally into flat, horizontal trim instead of the feet-down posture jacket BCDs encourage at the surface.

The appeal is modularity and fit. The same plate takes a single tank adapter today and manifolded doubles next year, wings swap to match the lift a configuration needs, and the harness is cut to your body rather than bought in S, M, or L. A steel plate also moves roughly 2 to 3 kg of ballast off your weight belt and spreads it across your back, improving trim for many divers.

The minimalist one-piece harness with a single crotch strap is the signature of the Hogarthian approach popularized in cave diving and by agencies like GUE. Recreational divers increasingly choose the system too, usually with a smaller wing sized for a single tank.
