Technical Diving

Diving beyond recreational limits, involving planned decompression, overhead environments, or mixed gases, with redundant equipment and formal training.

Technical diving is diving that goes beyond recreational limits: past 40 m, into planned decompression, inside overhead environments such as caves and wreck interiors, or onto gases other than air and standard nitrox. The defining feature is that a direct ascent to the surface is no longer an option, whether because of a physical ceiling or a decompression obligation, so problems must be solved at depth with the equipment and gas on hand.

That constraint drives everything else. Technical divers carry redundant gas supplies and regulators, often in doubles or sidemount configuration, plus stage bottles with travel and deco gases, each analyzed and labeled with its maximum operating depth. Dives are planned around run times, minimum gas, and contingency profiles, and executed with team protocols drilled until they are automatic. Training progresses through decompression procedures into trimix, cave, and rebreather curricula at agencies such as TDI, IANTD, GUE, and PADI TecRec.

The reward is access: deep wrecks, long cave passages, and marine environments that recreational limits simply cannot reach. The cost is honest too, in money, training time, and acceptance of risk, and good technical instructors are frank that the discipline is not for everyone.
