How to import dives from a Suunto dive computer

Worth knowing

• Suunto splits its range across three mutually exclusive routes, and picking the wrong one is the main reason divers get stuck. Bluetooth models (Ocean, D5, EON Steel, EON Steel Black, EON Core) pair straight to the phone app. Cable models (D4f, D4i, D4i Novo, D6i, D6i Novo, D9, D9tx, DX, Zoop Novo, Vyper Novo, Cobra3) need SuuntoLink on a desktop to reach that same app. Everything older reaches neither.
• DM5 and SuuntoLink do not cover the same models, which trips people up constantly. DM5 lists Zoop and HelO2 but not Vyper Novo, Cobra3 or D4f; SuuntoLink lists Vyper Novo, Cobra3 and D4f but not Zoop or HelO2. A Zoop or HelO2 owner can therefore get a file out via DM5 but can never get those dives into the Suunto app.
• DM5 is the only Suunto tool that produces a portable file. It exports PDF, SDE, XML, SML and DAN DL7 (SDE and PDF as one combined file, XML and SML as one file per dive) and imports SDE, XML, SDP and SML. Suunto ships no UDDF export anywhere in its lineup.
• The Suunto app's only per-dive export is a .FIT file, reached from an individual entry's overflow menu. There is no bulk logbook export from the app, so a diver with hundreds of dives in the cloud has no one-click way to get them all out.
• DM5 shows every sign of abandonment: no version number or changelog is published, both installers are still served from dm5.movescount.com even though the Movescount service itself was retired, and the download page still quotes OS X 10.7 as a minimum.
• On macOS, DM5 is a Mono application and Suunto's own page instructs Mac users to pin Mono Framework 5.18 'until further notice'. Installing a current Mono is a well-known cause of DM5 hanging on the 'configuring Mono Framework' step. There is no native Apple Silicon build.
• SuuntoLink may prompt to install an FTDI driver before it can read a cable-connected dive computer. Suunto states this in its own sync FAQ. FTDI's driver site rejects scripted requests (HTTP 403), so no direct FTDI download URL could be verified and none is included here; get it through the SuuntoLink prompt or from FTDI in a normal browser.
• There are two different, non-interchangeable Suunto USB cables: the current one for the D-series plus Vyper Novo and Zoop Novo, and a separate 'old USB cable' for the legacy wide-body computers. Both product pages are listed above.
• Legacy analogue models (Vyper, Vyper Air, Vytec, Vytec DS, Cobra, Cobra2, Vyper2, Gekko, Mosquito, Stinger, and older) are effectively orphaned: they appear in neither DM5's nor SuuntoLink's compatibility list. Their manuals are still hosted, but getting dives off them in 2026 means the discontinued DM4 or a third-party libdivecomputer-based tool with the old cable.
• Suunto publishes no separate user guide for the D4i Novo or D6i Novo. The base D4i and D6i guides serve both. Zoop Novo and Vyper Novo do have their own guides, under underscore-separated folder names on the manual server.
• Both SuuntoLink installers are roughly 100 MB; the DM5 Windows download is only a ~550 KB web installer that pulls the rest down on first run, while the DM5 Mac disk image is the full ~41 MB.
