Ascent rate is the speed at which you move toward the surface, and it is one of the most important numbers in dive safety. Ascending too fast does two dangerous things: it lets dissolved nitrogen form bubbles faster than your body can manage, raising decompression sickness risk, and it can cause lung overexpansion injury if expanding air is not exhaled normally. Agencies teach maximum rates between 9 and 18 m per minute, and most modern dive computers enforce something close to 9 or 10 m per minute with visual and audible alarms.

A practical benchmark is to rise no faster than your smallest exhaled bubbles and to slow down even more in the final 5 m, where the proportional pressure change is greatest. Good ascent technique combines a controlled fin pace with venting the BCD progressively, since the air in it expands as you rise and will accelerate you if left unchecked.

Your dive computer records ascent speed throughout the dive, and violations show up clearly in the downloaded profile, worth reviewing in your logbook after the dive. Pairing a slow ascent with a safety stop at 5 m/15 ft is the standard recipe for ending every recreational dive. Many divers treat the ascent as part of the dive to be enjoyed slowly, not a commute to the exit.
