Advanced Open Water Diver

The second-level recreational certification, extending the depth limit to 30 m (100 ft) through experience dives such as deep and navigation.

Advanced Open Water Diver is the usual second step after Open Water. Its headline benefit is depth: certified divers are qualified to 30 m (100 ft), which opens up many wrecks, walls, and reef sites that sit below the 18 m entry level limit. Many dive operators require an advanced card, or an equivalent, before taking guests on deeper boat dives.

The course is built around experience rather than classroom time. At PADI, for example, it consists of five adventure dives, with a deep dive and an underwater navigation dive mandatory, plus three electives such as night, wreck, drift, or peak performance buoyancy. Each dive introduces the planning, hazards, and techniques of that specialty. SSI reaches a comparable Advanced rating through a combination of specialty courses and logged dives instead.

Advanced Open Water is not a mastery badge, it is structured exposure to new conditions under supervision. Many divers take it immediately after Open Water, which is allowed, though a handful of ordinary dives in between makes the adventure dives far more useful. Each adventure dive can also count as the first dive of the corresponding full specialty course, so the card doubles as a sampler for deciding what to pursue next.
