Underwater Navigation
Finding your way underwater using a compass and natural references, so the dive follows its plan and ends at the intended exit.
Underwater navigation is how you know where you are and how to get back, in a place with no signage, limited visibility, and a current that moves the ground beneath you. It combines two toolsets. Compass navigation gives you headings: swim out on 90 degrees, return on 270, or run a square pattern with timed legs. Natural navigation reads the environment: depth contours, sand ripples that generally run parallel to shore, the direction of light, distinctive rocks and coral heads, and the angle of the current.
Good navigators measure distance as well as direction, using kick cycles, elapsed time, or tank pressure consumed. In practice the two systems interlock: the compass keeps the heading honest while natural references confirm progress and catch errors. Navigation is a core skill because it protects the dive plan, keeps the team off long surface swims, and matters doubly on shore dives, night dives, and anywhere visibility drops.
The skill is formally taught in the open water course and deepened in advanced and specialty navigation training. Practice deliberately: run a compass square in a pool or over sand, count kick cycles on a known distance, and on guided dives quietly navigate along with the guide instead of switching off. Sketching a map of a new site afterward is old-school and still one of the best exercises there is.
