SSI (Scuba Schools International)
A major global certification agency founded in the United States in 1970, known for digital-first training materials and its dive-center-based model.
SSI, Scuba Schools International, is one of the largest recreational certification agencies in the world. It was founded in the United States in 1970 and now operates in more than 100 countries. SSI certifications follow the same ISO standards as other mainstream agencies, so an SSI Open Water Diver card is recognized by dive operators everywhere a PADI or NAUI card would be.
SSI is distinctive in two ways. First, it went digital early: training materials, certifications, and your logbook all live in the SSI app rather than on paper. Second, SSI instructors must teach through an affiliated dive center rather than independently, which SSI argues keeps training quality tied to an established shop. Course structure is also slightly more flexible than the strictly modular approach some other agencies use, letting instructors adapt the order of skills to the student.
For divers, the practical takeaway is simple: SSI training is equivalent in level to other major agencies, and crossover between agencies at the same certification level is routine. SSI also awards recognition ratings based on logged experience, such as Level 5 at 100 dives, which gives its digital logbook an unusually central role in the system and rewards divers who record every dive consistently.
