Slack tide
The short window around the turn of the tide when tidal currents nearly stop, often the only safe time to dive high-current sites.
Slack tide, or slack water, is the brief period when tidal current drops to near zero as the flow reverses direction. It usually occurs around high and low water but can lag them by an hour or more depending on local geography, and it may last anywhere from a few minutes in a fierce channel to over an hour in a gentle bay.
For current-swept sites, slack is everything. Famous drift and channel dives, such as the passes of the Pacific Northwest or Scotland's tidal narrows, are planned so the group splashes just before predicted slack, dives through the calm window, and surfaces before the new flow builds. Missing slack by even 30 minutes can turn a relaxed, easy dive into an uncontrollable ride.
Predicting slack takes local tide tables plus local knowledge, since charts give the reference port, not your exact pinnacle. Neap tides, with their smaller range, produce longer and gentler slack windows than spring tides, which is why hard sites are often scheduled for neaps. Skippers and dive briefings usually own this calculation, but understanding it makes you a better buddy. Arrive early: being geared up ahead of slack always beats chasing it.
