Ice dive
A dive under a frozen surface through a cut hole, run as a tethered team operation with surface support, ropes, and cold-rated regulators.
An ice dive takes place beneath a frozen surface, entering through a hole cut in the ice of a lake, quarry, or sea. It is an overhead environment: the ice is a ceiling, and the only exit is the hole you came through, so ice diving is run as a disciplined team operation, never a casual buddy dive. The reward is surreal, cathedral light through the ice, upside-down bubbles pooling like mercury, and water of exceptional winter clarity.
Standard protocol tethers each diver to the surface with a rope managed by a line tender, using pull signals for communication, while a fully dressed safety diver stands by at the hole. Penetration distances stay short, dives are shallow and brief, and equipment is the story: cold-water regulators that resist free-flow, a drysuit with heavy undergarments or heated vest, dry gloves, and redundant regulators because a freezing free-flow is the signature failure.
The Ice Diver specialty teaches hole cutting, tending, rope signals, and rescue. Famous cold-water arenas include Russia's White Sea, with beluga whales under ice, and Canadian and Scandinavian lakes. Few dives earn a logbook page like the one with air temperature at minus 15 and water at plus 2. It is a niche pursuit, demanding and cold, and for many divers completely unforgettable.
