House reef

The reef directly in front of a dive resort or center, dived from shore at will; a good house reef offers unlimited easy dives and night dives.

A house reef is the reef immediately accessible from a dive resort, dive center, or liveaboard mooring, close enough to reach by a short swim from the beach or jetty rather than a boat ride. The term is a fixture of Red Sea and Indo-Pacific resort diving, where the quality of the house reef can matter as much as the boat schedule when choosing where to stay.

A good house reef changes how you dive on a trip. Because entry is trivial and guides optional for certified divers, you can dive it at any hour: an unhurried afternoon dive, a sunset dive, a night dive ten steps from your room. It is the ideal place for a check dive to sort weighting and gear on day one, for camera practice, and for slow muck-style hunts that boat schedules never allow.

Some house reefs are world class in their own right, and repeat guests learn them intimately, resident turtles, the frogfish that holds one sponge for months. Logging repeated dives on the same house reef is also the clearest way to watch a single reef change across seasons and years. If you are choosing between resorts for a trip, ask how deep it gets and whether unguided buddy diving is allowed.
