Halocline
A boundary where fresh and salt water meet without mixing, producing a blurry, shimmering layer, most famous in the cenotes of the Yucatan.
A halocline is a boundary layer between water masses of different salinity, typically fresh water floating on denser salt water. When a diver swims through it, the two waters mix around the body and light refracts chaotically, so everything looks blurred, like swimming through vaseline or heat haze. Once you pass fully into the layer below, visibility snaps back to normal.
Haloclines form wherever fresh water sits over sea water: springs discharging into the ocean, brackish estuaries, and above all the cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, where rainwater filters through limestone and rests on intruding sea water. In cenotes such as Angelita and The Pit, the halocline can be so distinct that it resembles a second surface inside the cave.
Practical effects are real: buoyancy changes as you cross into denser salt water, so expect to adjust your BCD, and a team swimming single file should stagger vertically so the leader does not stir the layer into soup for everyone behind. Guides often brief a specific crossing technique for exactly this reason. Photographers should shoot above or below the layer, never inside it.
