Gas Density
The mass of breathing gas per liter, which rises with depth and increases breathing effort and carbon dioxide risk; divers aim to keep it moderate.
Gas density is how much a liter of your breathing gas weighs, and it climbs in direct proportion to ambient pressure. Air that weighs about 1.3 grams per liter at the surface weighs around four times that at 30 m. Denser gas is physically harder to move through your airways and regulator, so every breath at depth costs more effort than the same breath in the shallows.
The danger is not the effort itself but what it enables: as breathing work rises, divers under-ventilate and retain carbon dioxide, and elevated CO2 drives hypercapnia, deepens narcosis, and raises the risk of oxygen toxicity. Research presented from the Divers Alert Network community recommends keeping breathing gas density at or below 5.2 grams per liter, with 6.2 as a hard ceiling, thresholds that air crosses at roughly 31 m and 39 m respectively.
This is a core reason technical divers add helium: it is about seven times lighter than nitrogen, so a trimix blend keeps gas density workable at depths where air would breathe like syrup. Recreational divers manage the same physics simply by respecting depth limits and staying relaxed at depth.
